Background

Alaina Shonkwiler (R) is serving her first term in the Indiana House after winning the HD-29 seat in 2024. She is a lifelong Noblesville resident and former district director for U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz, and was previously a manager in government consulting at Katz, Sapper & Miller (Sources 4, 5). Shonkwiler won the 2024 Republican primary against Laura Alerding (the former Hamilton East Public Library board president associated with a contentious library policy) and defeated Democrat Chris Hartig in the general election (Source 5). HD-29 covers portions of Noblesville and Fishers in Hamilton County. In 2025, she was recognized as an "Indy's Best and Brightest" finalist in the government category by KPMG (Source 14). She faces no Republican primary opponent in 2026 and will face the winner of the Democratic primary between Coumba Kebe and Devon Wellington (Source 2).

Positions

Fiscal responsibility

Support

Shonkwiler voted Yes on SB 1 (2025), the property tax relief package (Source 12). She voted Yes on SB 1 (2026), the SNAP/Medicaid eligibility tightening bill, which passed 62–31; she is listed in the Yea bloc by name in whip-list data (Source 8, Source 11). No contrary vote or statement on fiscal legislation was found.

Limited government

Support

Shonkwiler voted Yes on HB 1032 (December 2025 special session redistricting), listed in the Yea bloc by name (Source 8). She voted Yes on SB 289 (2025, DEI prohibition), consistent with the 64–26 House passage (Source 10). Her challenger opponent Devon Wellington notes publicly that Shonkwiler "voted the party line on every single vote since taking office" and specifically criticizes Shonkwiler's vote to make school board elections partisan, which Wellington states directly contradicted constituent preferences expressed in the 2024 election (Source cited in Wellington campaign — not a Shonkwiler source; documented here for context only).

Second Amendment

Support

Shonkwiler voted Yes on HB 1084 (2024), the 2A Privacy Act, which passed 73–22; she is listed in the Yea bloc in whip-list and roll-call data consistent with all House Republicans (Source 13). She did not serve in 2022 and therefore has no HB 1296 vote. No IFI 2024 score found for Shonkwiler because the scorecard covers only members who served in the 2024 session and Shonkwiler was elected in November 2024 (Source 6); her 2024 vote was cast as a freshman during the short special session cycle.

Pro-life issues

Family values

Support

Shonkwiler voted Yes on HB 1041 (2025, Women's College Sports / collegiate female athlete protections), consistent with the 71–25 House result and the Republican Yea bloc (Source 9). She voted Yes on SB 289 (2025, DEI prohibition), which IFI tracks as a family-values/limited-government lens vote (Source 10). Her vote on SB 143 (2025, Parental Rights) cannot be confirmed by individual name from available sources (Source 15); the bill passed the House 92–0.
