Background

Gregory Steuerwald has represented House District 40 (Hendricks County) continuously since 2007, following earlier service beginning in the legislature (Source 1). He is an attorney with Steuerwald, Witham and Youngs, LLP in Danville, and holds a B.S. from Indiana State University (1974), an M.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama (1977), and a J.D. from IU-Indianapolis (1981) (Source 1). He authored the foundational law for Indiana's comprehensive criminal code revision — the most significant rewrite in decades — and currently serves as Majority Caucus Chair and on the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee (Sources 1, 13). In the 2025 session, Steuerwald was appointed as a House advisor and then elevated to conferee for SB 289, the DEI prohibition bill.
