Background
Ron Alting has represented Senate District 22 (Lafayette area, Tippecanoe County) since 1998 or 1999 and is the longest-serving member of the Indiana Senate (Sources 1, 16). He ran and won a city council seat before being elected to the Senate, and his campaign website describes him as a "Proven. Principled. Conservative." small business owner (Source 1). He holds a Trump endorsement for the 2026 primary and is facing primary challenges from Richard Bagsby on the Republican side and two Democratic challengers (Source 15). The Indiana Chamber of Commerce gave him a 45% score in 2025 and a 74% four-year aggregate, reflecting significant divergence from Chamber-aligned positions in the most recent session (Source 4).
Positions
Fiscal responsibility
MixedAlting's campaign website states he "voted for the largest tax cut in state history" and pledges to keep taxes low and cut spending (Source 1). His 2026 newsletter states he "supported a new law to save Hoosiers $237 million in taxes on tips, overtime pay" (Source 3). However, he voted NAY on SB 1 (2025), the $1.3 billion property tax relief bill that was Governor Braun's top priority; he was one of 12 Republicans who joined Democrats in voting no (27-22 passage) (Source 14). The Indiana Chamber gave him only 45% in 2025, the lowest four-year aggregate drop among the incumbents in this batch (Source 4). The record is mixed between stated pro-tax-cut principles and opposition to SB 1.
Limited government
MixedAlting voted YEA on HB 1032 (2025 special session), the mid-cycle congressional redistricting bill, which the Senate ultimately defeated 31-19 (Sources 14, 17). His campaign cites "protection of private property" and opposition to "government overreach" as priorities (Source 1). However, the IFI 2023 scorecard gave him 67%, with two X marks on IFI-priority bills (Source 18), indicating divergence from conservative limited-government positions on certain social issues. The record is mixed.
Second Amendment
SupportAlting's campaign website states he "voted in support of Constitutional Carry to guarantee the Second Amendment rights of Hoosiers" (Source 1). The Indiana Scorecard roll call confirms his name appears in the senator list for the HB 1296 (2022) vote (30-20 passage); individual YEA designation is consistent with his own campaign statement (Sources 10, 18). He also voted YEA on HB 1084 (2024), the Second Amendment Privacy Act (passed 41-8) (Source 10).
Pro-life issues
No public position foundNo confirmed direct statement, vote, or questionnaire response by Alting specifically on abortion or pro-life legislation was located in available sources. The IFI 2023 scorecard shows two issue votes where Alting voted against IFI-priority bills (Source 18), which may include pro-life items, but the specific bills he voted against in 2023 were not individually attributed to him in available sources. No confirmation of his vote on SB 143, SB 236, or the 2022 abortion special session was found in available public sources.
Family values
MixedThe IFI 2023 scorecard gave Alting 67%, with checkmarks on four bills and X marks on two (Sources 6, 20). The specific bills he voted against are identified in the IFI document as including two of six scored measures, but the individual assignment of which two he opposed was not separately confirmed in available sources. He did not appear in the 2026 RLNI endorsement list. Indiana Chamber gave him only 45% in the 2025 session (Source 4), reflecting broad policy divergence.
