Background
Richard Bagsby is owner of Tee Off Golf in Lafayette and a minister from the eastern edge of Tippecanoe County who is challenging incumbent Ron Alting in the SD-22 Republican primary (Sources 2, 3). He entered the race in May 2025, arguing that Alting "isn't conservative enough" and describing his campaign as offering "the only conservative option" in the district (Sources 2, 3). He is backed by Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith (Source 3). After Trump endorsed Alting, Bagsby posted a response video stating he is "focused on the people of District 22, listening to them, fighting for them" and that "affordability, lower taxes, and term limits are at the top of the list" (Source 5).
Positions
Fiscal responsibility
SupportBagsby's Agenda 22 platform includes commitments to "Lower Utility Bills" (fight unjustified rate hikes), "Strengthen the Economy" (stabilize living costs, grow opportunity), "Fight Rising Costs" (address grocery, housing, insurance pressures), and "Hold Government Accountable" (end insider politics, demand transparency in spending) (Source 1). In a post-Trump-endorsement video, he stated that "affordability, lower taxes, and term limits are at the top of the list" (Source 5). These are direct statements by the candidate on fiscal themes.
Limited government
SupportBagsby's Agenda 22 commitment #11 states: "Hold Government Accountable — End insider politics, expose backroom deals, and demand transparency in spending and decision-making" (Source 1). Commitment #12 states: "Protect Faith and Religious Freedom — Ensure families, churches, and ministries are free to live out their convictions without government interference" (Source 1). Commitment #1 states: "Lead with Courage — Not Convenience — No abstaining on difficult votes. No bending to the establishment" (Source 1). His campaign positioned itself as opposing what it called "establishment" politics (Sources 2, 3).
Second Amendment
SupportBagsby's Agenda 22 commitment #13 states: "Defend Constitutional Rights — Stand firm on free speech, the right to bear arms, due process, and equal treatment under the law" (Source 1). The America First Insights group endorsed him, calling him "an American first patriot" (Source 5). The campaign website's home page positions him as opposing "weak representation" and standing for constitutional rights (Source 2).
Pro-life issues
SupportBagsby's Agenda 22 commitment #12 states: "Protect Faith and Religious Freedom — Ensure families, churches, and ministries are free to live out their convictions without government interference" (Source 1). As a minister, his campaign is grounded in religious and traditional values (Sources 2, 3). No specific pro-life pledge or questionnaire response was located in available sources; however, commitment #4 ("Defend Parental Rights") and #5 ("Protect Integrity in Education") reflect values alignment. His campaign explicitly aligns with the 2024 Republican Party Platform (Source 1). Scored as `support` based on stated religious-freedom and parental-rights commitments that directly encompass pro-life values per his own platform text, with the caveat that no specific abortion statement was confirmed.
Family values
Strong supportBagsby's Agenda 22 includes commitment #4: "Defend Parental Rights — Ensure parents have transparency, control, and respect in their children's education," and commitment #5: "Protect Integrity in Education — Keep classrooms focused on academics, civics, discipline, and excellence not ideological agendas" (Source 1). Commitment #12 specifically protects faith and religious freedom of families and churches (Source 1). He is a minister and his campaign is explicitly positioned around conservative family and community values (Sources 2, 3).
