Background
Spencer Deery was elected to Senate District 23 in 2022, his first bid for any elected office, defeating Democrat David Sanders (Source 3). He is an attorney and holds a law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law; he represents Fountain, Parke, Vermillion, and Warren counties, and portions of Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties (Source 1). Deery publicly opposed mid-cycle congressional redistricting and voted against HB 1032 in the December 2025 special session, stating in an August 2025 release that "voters choose their leaders" and that he took an oath to support popular sovereignty (Source 12). That vote made him a target for a Trump-endorsed primary challenger (Source 13).
Positions
Fiscal responsibility
SupportDeery voted YES on SB 1 (2025), the property-tax relief and local-government-finance reform package signed into law April 15, 2025 (Source 6). No conflicting fiscal votes identified.
Limited government
MixedDeery voted NO on HB 1032 (Dec. 2025 special session), the mid-cycle congressional redistricting bill, citing constitutional limits on partisan map manipulation — a position his opponents frame as opposing the party (Source 11)(Source 12). His IFI 2025 score of 100% reflects consistent support for limiting government intrusion in parental and education matters (Source 4).
Second Amendment
SupportDeery was not in the Senate for HB 1296 (2022 permitless carry). He has received NRA PVF support in his 2022 campaign, as cited by the context provided; however, no independently verified NRA grade or direct Deery statement was confirmed in this research cycle. Scoring rests on endorsement context only — see Endorsements. ⚠️ Direct voting record on 2A bills pre-dates his tenure; no personal statement confirmed. Pro-life issues
SupportDeery voted YES on SB 236 (2026), legislation creating civil liability for provision of abortion-inducing drugs, 35-10 Senate passage (Source 7). He was not in the Senate for the 2022 special-session SB 1 abortion ban.
