Background
Rodney Pol Jr. is an attorney and Democrat from Chesterton, Indiana, who has served in Senate District 4 since being caucus-appointed on November 1, 2021, succeeding Sen. Karen Tallian. He was elected to a full term on November 8, 2022, defeating Republican Jeff Larson with 52.3% of the vote. He earned his B.A. in psychology, political science, and music from Indiana University Bloomington and his J.D. from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He is the first Latino candidate elected to the Indiana State Senate, and currently serves as Senate Minority Caucus Chair (Source 1). Positions
Fiscal responsibility
OpposePol voted NAY on SB 1 (2025), the major property tax reform bill, which passed 27–22 (Source 4). He voted NAY on SB 1 (2026), the Medicaid and SNAP immigration verification bill, which passed 39–9; Senate Democrats broadly opposed the bill as harmful to eligible Hoosiers (Source 11). The Freedom Index rates Pol at approximately 17%, indicating consistent opposition to the scorecard's fiscal-conservative criteria.
Limited government
OpposePol voted NAY on HB 1032 (2025 special session), the redistricting bill, which failed 31–19 (Source 5). However, as a Democrat and minority caucus member, his opposition to HB 1032 was shared with all 10 Senate Democrats and was grounded in partisan and electoral concerns rather than a limited-government philosophy. The Freedom Index rates him approximately 17% overall.
Second Amendment
OpposePol voted NAY on HB 1084 (2024), the Second Amendment Privacy Act, which passed 39–9 with all Democrats voting NAY (Source 9). No public statement by Pol directly addressing Second Amendment rights was located.
Pro-life issues
OpposePol voted NAY on SB 236 (2026), the abortion-inducing drug ban, which passed the Senate 35–10 with all Democrats present voting NAY (Source 6). He voted NAY on SB 143 (2025), Parental Rights as a Fundamental Right (Source 7). The IFI 2025 scorecard rates him at 29% (Source 3).
Family values
MixedPol voted YEA on HB 1041 (2025), Save Women's College Sports, which passed the Senate 42–6 (Source 10, Source 3). This is notably the only pro-family-values-defined bill tracked by IFI on which he voted with IFI's position. He voted NAY on SB 143 (2025, Parental Rights), SB 289 (2025, DEI ban), and SB 442 (2025, school board sexuality curriculum transparency) (Source 3). The IFI 2025 scorecard rates him 29% (Source 3).
